Chapter 6那是我们的节日

六一新衣配歌舞，

芒种水田飞白鹭，

端午青苇托粽肚，

夏至龙虾兜网住。

Chapter 6   This is our festival！

June 1^st wears new clothes for singing and dancing,

Grain in Ear sees egrets flyingover the paddy field,

Dragon Boat Festival provides Zongzi above the reed leaves,

Summer Solstice catches lobster alive in the nets.

“荷风送香气，竹露滴清响”的六月艳阳在孩子们的百感交集中如约而至，虽然漫长闲适的暑假在望、但是在劫难逃的期末考试在即。然而这两样都不会磨蚀对六一的憧憬和希翼。上个月起妈妈就会从上海或者崇明南门的正品商场里选购童装样式，当然，咨询上海知青的穿衣建议会是一个更便捷的途径，甚至不乏干脆委托知青们代购的本土父母。于是乎，不少孩子在节日当天的一齐撞衫就成了父母审美趣味相同的最佳证明。

    The sunny June arrives with air full of lotus aroma and the bamboos full of dews, more importantly, the mixed feelings among students. Although the long summer vacation draws near, the final exam is right at hand. However, it will not ruin the expectationsand anticipation toward the Children’s Day. Mothershave begun to choose the latest clothing styles for their children from May. Of course, there is a more convenient alternative is to consult educated youth from Shanghai downtown regarding the dressing suggestions, or more simply, entrust themfor the purchase. Hence, without any doubt, children wearing the same clothes on the theywell represent their parents' equal aesthetic tastes.

九十年代农场的学校老师多为市区知青，通过一年难得数次的返程机会，把市区学校里正当流行的舞蹈、歌曲、甚至游戏经过整整一天的水路泊船、陆路公交，最后声情并茂地传递到孩子们天真而艳羡的期盼里。节日当天，无论是代购还是量体裁衣的定制，孩子们都会花枝招展地盛装出席一场与夏日万物同样蓬勃热烈的演出。学校操场和礼堂里的欢快童声恰似落凡的天籁悦耳赏心。小皮鞋踏出轻快响脆的节奏，小裙边转出活脱起伏的韵律，小头饰晃出欢愉喜悦的节拍。一番良辰美景教人不得不感叹“金吾不禁夜，玉漏莫相催”呵！

    In the 1990s, teachers in the farm schools are mostly educated youths from the city,whose rare return to the downtownfor latest dances, songs, and even games requires a whole day transportationincluding boat and buses. However, it seems rather worthwhile when the teacher meets the innocent and eager eyes of the kids. On the celebration day, everygorgeously dressed child is eager to perform the part cheerfully in the school playground and auditorium. The very day sees he small leather shoes dancing briskly and rhythmically, the small skirt turned ups and downs lively, and the small headdress swayed to the jaunty beat. What a joyful day it is!

六一过后，即是芒种。王维的“漠漠水田飞白鹭，阴阴夏木啭黄鹂”几乎是为崇明的芒种度身定制的佳句。稻田中目及之处都夏水汪汪、波光粼粼，秧苗在垄头边等待着辛勤的双手。而翩然展翅的白鹭几乎是岛上的原住民，一出动便会成群结队地立于田间，优雅地翻找吃食，与插秧的村民农户相安无事，甚至其乐融融。此时的桑柳樟榆也深秀正当时，黄鹂和布谷婉转清亮的鸣叫透过茂叶荫盖传入耳中，禅意深邃。

    After the celebration, it is Grain in Ear when the rice field is surely the grand sightseeing for the season. The water is bright and sparkling, with seedlings waiting for the hard working hands. Moreover, the egrets spreading their wings seem to be the original habitants in the island,where they stand looking for food in their elegant way, making peace with all the villagers who are doing the plantation, and enjoy themselves. Trees such as mulberries and willows are flourishing, intriguing the singing orioles and cuckoos.

此时的蚕宝宝正在化蛹成蛾，所以才桑叶的义务已经告别，但还是会习惯性地途径桑树林，发现桑果正盛，随手从枝上择下深紫泛黑的桑葚塞入口中，舌尖立马被浆果喷薄而出的甘甜汁液所征服，顾不得双唇和舌苔因着深紫色素的附着被疑为怪诞，一定要吃到饱嗝才算过瘾。心满意足地穿林而归，才深觉“垂緌饮清露，流响出疏桐”的知了声已然是整个夏日的背景乐了。

    By this time, the silkworm is transforming to moth, bidding farewellto mulberry leaves, but it is still customary for kids to pass by the forest of booming fruits. Theunforgettable berry tastestarts from tip of the tongue that is immediately conquered by the sweet juice of the berry spray. Even though the lips and the tongue are suspected of being grotesque because of the adhesion of the dark purple pigment,one cannot stop eating till the stomach rejects with a belch. Unnoticeably, the cicada humming has been the background music of the whole summer.

转眼端午，崇明对于赛龙舟的热忱并没有内陆那样兴盛，也许是四面环水且通江达海的地理位置曾让岛民们对潮涌蔓延的凶险心有余悸，因而就更向往一片安居乐业的净土，享受着春播、夏种、秋收、冬藏的平原四季风俗。弄潮江海，日日颠簸的捕鱼挑战成了无法忘却也不愿重蹈的纪念。所以，端午象征意义更浓的粽子成了主角。

    Then comes Dragon Boat Festival whenChongming’senthusiasm lies not in the dragon boat race but the Zongzi, i.e. the glutinous rice dumpling. Perhaps the geographical location causesthe islanders a lingering fear of the tides, so they are more eager to live in peace and enjoyment rather than the fishing challenge in the turbulent waves. Therefore, the dragon boat festival here have the dessert as the seasonal symbol.

崇明的粽子就食材和外观而言与整个江南一带并无二致，甚至口味也大同小异。然而，整个包粽子的过程最能引发孩子们兴趣的大致就是挑芦叶环节了。崇明的芦苇叶在百姓生活几乎不可或缺：春来做圆子的底托，夏季成为粽子的包叶，秋日芦花开时，就把芦穗扎成崭新的扫帚，冬天韧性十足的芦杆被手巧的匠人做成芦苇席子或者帘子，真可谓贯穿四时。

    ChongmingZongzi is not distinctive among its same kind in South Chinaregarding ingredients, appearance, and the taste. However, itsgreen coat, the reed serves as anindispensable part in daily life throughout the seasons. In spring it is the base of Yuanzi, in summer, they wrapthe rice ball, in autumn its flowers are tied to be new broom, and in winter resilience of the reeds made them the ideal material for craftsman as mat or curtain.

挑芦叶首先要小心夜蛾和草螟的虫卵隐蔽在叶子背面，因而须细心择选，其次有虫眼的叶片有伤颜值，也要坚决剔除，最后只有健康、翠绿、坚韧、且成熟舒展的叶片才能入选粽子的外衣。期间孩子还会央求着父亲做一个灵巧的芦笛，像模像样地奋力吹出些小调，或者用尚未绽开的叶片与芦苇茎共同编织成一个惟妙惟肖的螳螂，再从草丛里抓一只真身来比对，出奇的玩法数不胜数。

    For Children, the essential process of making a Zongzi is to pick the best reeds. The leavesneed to be chosen carefully so as toavoid themoth and grasshoppershidden at the back, not to mention those with insect bitted trace. Apart from leave picking, kids will plead their fathers to make a smart reed flute out of these plants, trying to blow some minor tune. Luckier will be those whose fathers are capable of turning the reed stems into a vivid grasshopper model that can even compare to a real insect.

这个彻夜蝉鸣、梅雨不断的六月终于熬到了夏至，龙虾将军和螃蜞军队满沟打洞的模式也就此开启了。闷热黏潮的正午是睡不着午觉的，既然连树头的知了也烦躁难耐，不如相互捉弄下。于是，一干孩子提着网兜开始了捕蝉的营生。这餐风宿露、“居高声自远”的夏日活物乍看愣头愣脑、嘶声颂暑得心无旁骛，但飞逃起来绝不含糊，某些被网兜错过的知了，还会在逃脱之时喷向捕猎者一脸尿液以泄私愤。大多不幸被捕的小家伙就默不作声地任凭摆布，脆弱、通透的薄翅在阳光下微微泛青，“薄如蝉翼”在这里是无需形容解释，只需指触眼观的词汇。

   The humid and muggymonsoon nights finally reached the summer solstice when lobsters and crab army are full of ditches and riverbank. The sultry noon makes a nap impossible in addition to the irritating cicada crying. Thus children start their catching game with the screaming insects. Those who fortunately escape will take the chance topiss right onto the hunter’s face to vent their anger. Those who have got arrested, however, will face the result silently, and keep their fragile and transparent thin wings green in the sun. Hence, the phrase "as thin as a cicada flap" is not only a descriptionbut a touch and feel for all the young game players.

六月就是这样，在儿童节的舞台上由于差点忘词而一身冷汗，在肉粽的馅儿盆里偷吃一口结果发现生米尚未煮成熟饭，在父亲节前夕，祈祷憨厚的爸爸能在下一次与妈妈的争执中占上风，直到长大后才明白那是场因为爱和宽容而永远不会胜出的口角。

    This is June. The children's day celebration sees stage fright making a few young actress sweater and tremble all over. Stealing a bite from theZongzi fillings turns out to be a mistake as the stuffing isstill the raw rice that had yet been cooked. The eve of Father's Day witnesses the secret pray for father to be the winner of next quarrel with mother until one comes to understand thepaternal love and tolerance.
